I'm just getting around to reading these forum posts, Harry.
I got a real kick out of this one -- especially the last bit about the chance your spaniel will eat it! I've never owned a spaniel, but our neighbor across the street used to, and YEAH, t…
I don't follow the world of video games at all, Yoann, so I can't say if it's a fraud, or not. I do know Xbox 360 just dropped its price, but that's due to low sales because of the current economy.
It LOOKS very real to me, and from everything I kn…
To quote Gomez Addams, "I don't suffer from insanity... I thoroughly enjoy it!" :) I play in the dirt a little bit (perennials, shrubs, water garden, volunteer at local woodland garden and with my active garden club)... I'm a VIDIOT, which means, both the COMPUTER and the TV are always on at the same time, and even so, half the time the computer's recording something on Media Center because I can't watch two things at once... About the only major sport I really enjoy is tennis, and I'm watching U.S. Open on USA right now (kindasorta)... Like classical, jazz, art rock (think Pink, Yes, Parsons Project, etc.) and some various others, Single, straight and still looking, ladies... Happy to see Harry's up and running.
I'm proof you can be a native white Southern boy and still like Obama, too!
I'm not QUITE the "technogeek" I maybe once was, maybe because I came to realize I didn't have the money to be "all that" and also because I got tired of seeing the technology just change too fast... Big fan of HDTV, although I'm stuck at 720P for the forseeable future (and peeved that Cable is stuck at so few channels, as I'm just not comfortable going DISH or Direct at present). Regardless of all the paranoia at PC World, I upgraded to Vista as soon as it came out, and after literally MONTHS of HELL and about 10 re-installs, lol, I finally got it "right." When it works, it works pretty well... Stuck with my Circa Nov. 2006 Dell XPS 410 Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz with 4 GB of RAM for probably the next couple of years, since I relented on the extended warranty... Have a similar level HP 17" laptop I bought about a year ago so I could have it for a cross-country vacation to download digital photos (big on that, too), hardly used it, since.
Will doubtless go quad-core or MORE when the time comes... Was Mac for a number of years, and would like to go cross-platform again, but Mac is STILL way overpriced and I'm not "going there" as long as they are.
I've downloaded Linux, but not used it... Same with Firefox... I'm too interested in getting UTILITY out of my computers to be constantly trying out and learning NEW PROGRAMS and OSes... Something I decided about 20 years ago, after I became "an expert" on DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Works (both KILLER at the time), only to see them both left "in the dust." I can't keep up, and why should I try.
I like to surf, take and edit pictures, maybe a bit of the same with video... I don't want to have 3 to 5 ways to debate doing each, just ONE reliable, easy, SAFE way.
I use:
Windows
First Computer I Ever Owned and/or Used:
Brother had a that first TRS... the one you could play Space Invaders on your TV with.
Twitter name (if you've got one!)
Hmph... who has time to Twitter, email, post to boards AND Surf???

Had to get the site to reset my password because I couldn't remember it, lol. My new password is... (you KNOW I'm not going to do that, lol)!
I guess I really need to peruse this site a bit and see what's more to it than just these forums (which are great, in themselves, since it's always nice to be able to post and discuss with like minds). One thing that's on MY mind is just WHAT in the world is going on with PC World magazine! It seems like since Harry left the staff turnover AND re-arranging has been like a tornado named Steve whirled in through the doors! I don't know if the magazine's worse, better, or the same as a result, yet. I guess I need to compare some of my older issues to newer ones month/year to month/year, but I find it rather ODD that some of the Senior Editors and Contributing Editors have actually SWITCHED PLACES, for instance, in just a year or so...
I know sometimes big companies let longtime full-time employees go and bring on younger, new employees because they'll work for less money. I truly hope THAT'S not the sole reason for this, although I'm VERY aware of the financial realities of print media today, with several BIG newspapers having FOLDED their print editions (Seattle, for instance), as well as the once MIGHTY PC Magazine (I remember when IT was close to 500 pages EVERY MONTH) publishing it's FINAL print edition last January.
If cutting costs by changing some employee statuses was part of the equation to keep the print edition afloat, I guess it had to be done, although I REALLY don't like it for the writers and editors (being one, myself, albeit one currently on disability). The flipside is my subscription is through next April, and I just got a really good offer if I renew NOW for another two years. So I DO want it to keep publishing so I don't lose my subscription $$$, lol.
All that said, I've noticed that what few articles Harry continues to publish in PC World, although not every month, tend to be very BIG, important, multi-page and heavy-duty articles, which I really like.
As for Steve Fox, who somehow "magically appeared" as Vice President of Editorial Affairs only SEVERAL months after Harry left, seems to have literally NO use whatsoever other than writing the editorial each month, which the editor(s) NEVER get to do any more. I just HOPE he's not the "corporate hatchet man" I suspect he actually is.

Wow, thanks for your kind words! I am writing from a hotel room in Tampa where I am spending part of my vacation :)
I'll tell the art folks at PCW they need to upgrade my drawing. I'd love to have a funny one like Marie here. Harry and Marie are both friends as well as colleagues (coincidentally I have a cat named Marie and used to have one named Harry). Their creativity (the people's, not the cats') never ceases to amaze me.
My name is Marie Domingo and I'm a very good friend of Harry's. Like you, I've been following his career for years now and also like you, I'm a fan as well.
I did take note that you provided your email address on one of your comments to Harry's PCW blog post, so it seemed like you would appreciate knowing where he is now. I hope you like it in here and I'm sure he appreciates your feedback and insights as well. ~ Md
